Putting Our Big Kid Pants On...

My reaction to heading out to our first show of the season, first recognized show EVER for Anikan, first recognized show in 8 years for me, and first potential qualifier for regionals.

On March 20th I registered Anikan and myself with the USEF and USDF on the off the cuff idea that we could get to regionals. I had shown in recognized shows with another stellar OTTB, Ensigne, (story to come) and knew that scores don't come flying from that box at C like they do at schooling shows.  After Anikan and I had spent two years rocking and winning nearly everything we could in the schooling show circuit, I began to think what if? What if we could go and be successful? What if I could finally go to regionals like all those people I know do? What if this is a attainable goal? And what if we aren't successful and I don't have the horse I want, am I ready to sell?

So like any moderately insane person I sign up for the LEC Prix De Ville on April 8th and 9th. Its a fairly local venue for us (almost 2 hours away) and I've been there before thus I know the lay of the land. I was pretty confident that I know everyone in the area and no one is going to come into the warm up ring and wow me away from focusing on the job at hand. (Not to insult anyone showing but let's all be honest, it has happened to all of us). I also knew that there could be a bit of atmosphere there with a large viewing area, loud speakers, packed warmup, and bleacher seating. I haven't put Anikan in a place like this before and I thought let's just make sure he keeps that cool as a cucumber attitude under pressure.

In preparation I dedicated myself and my poor family to sticking to consistent lessons. I know I needed the eyes on the ground and if we are going to progress we need an ass-kicker! I planned on keeping Anikan at Training level for this first show as he finds First level canter work to be an excellent place to exhibit his crispy clean lead changes and Ferrari like lengthens. Additional preparation including making sure my show coat, breeches, and shirt fit post baby. Surprise! Coat fits and breeches don't. So off we go to ordering 3 pairs of white breeches to try on and send back the pairs I don't like and two clean white saddle pads. For all of those riders conveniently located near a quality tack store, say thank you, kiss the floor, and hug the owners each time you can go shopping and try things on! Living in Erie, PA our only options are to order multiple styles and send back what doesn't fit! (God bless Smartpak's free shipping!)

After making sure we are dressed, packed, clipped, schooled, and ready to go I am still freaking out but really...who wouldn't be?!

Blogging huh?

After many requests to document Anikan and my adventures in competitive dressage, I have (somewhat) reluctantly developed this blog. I've always personally hated the blog world as it seems self indulgent and a bit ego-centric. But here I am blogging away for your entertainment and viewing pleasure. So here is what you are going to see here and what you aren't going to see...

What is going to be on here:
-Shameless brags regarding Anikan's general amazingness, training, showing etc.
-Photographic and video (if I can figure it out) evidence of some potentially good riding and most likely some epically bad riding (on my part).
-Endless praise for Off the Track Thoroughbreds (here and after referred to as OTTBs) aka the best athlete and partner EVER!
-Completely opinionated and biased commentary on everything horse and generally life related.
-Adorable pics of my kid, tried (and potentially failed) recipes, and general life notes (I'm a working adult and as such I do other things than riding.)

What you aren't going to see:
-Hating of any nature
-Multi-thousand dollar horses, $300 pairs of breeches, and generally any obsenely expensive horses/equipment/anything (seriously, I am real person living on a real budget doing quite possibly the most expensive sport in the world).

Basically folks we see on the internet all these insanely beautiful riders, horses, equipment, farms etc. and no one is talking about how REAL people in REAL life on a REAL budget (I mean really do some of these dressage queens even know what a budget is???) are doing this and being successful!(And quite arguably are the backbone of this sport). I see wonderful amateurs every weekend out ROCKING it and yet they aren't the ones we discuss. Instead we discuss Valegros, Importing a new hot talent, training with the most expensive trainer/clinician money can find, and buying the newest fashions. So in an effort to give a shout out to all of us managing a full life out of the saddle and being a success in the saddle I've made this blog!

Hope you enjoy and feel free to comment!
